"Happiness" also seems to reference Gatsby, Daisy, and the infamous green light. Swift said it's about "the realization that maybe the only path to healing is to wish happiness on the one who took it away from you." Also in verse two, Swift sings pointedly, "I hope she'll be a beautiful fool / Who takes my spot next to you." Finally, Swift makes Gatsby's influence clear by using the book's most famous symbol. In "The Great Gatsby," the green light at the end of Daisy's dock represents Gatsby's undying love (or obsession, depending on how you look at it).

Read previewA Chinese state media report about rural men struggling to afford exorbitant dowries has triggered backlash online from people who say the bachelors are missing the point. State-run outlet Legal Daily published an article on Monday covering the dating lives of three rural men in their early 30s, who said they can no longer keep up with rising "betrothal prices." Many accounts, who listed themselves as female on their profiles, say men are using the unattainable dowries as an excuse for their undesirability as partners. It's not about the dowries, people sayRising dowries have unsettled Chinese officials already fretting about plummeting national birth and marriage rates. AdvertisementMeanwhile, it's become increasingly clear that officials are concerned by the growing prevalence of singlehood among rural men, with state media often discussing such bachelors leading loveless lives.

The images and sounds from A24's "Zone of Interest," which has earned a little over $24 million at the global box office, have haunted me since that weekend. AdvertisementUnlike most Holocaust films, Jonathan Glazer, the director of "The Zone of Interest," tells the story from the perpetrators' — and thus the murderers' — perspective. More precisely, he tells the story of Rudolf Höss, the camp commander of Auschwitz, one of the worst criminals of National Socialism. 'Zone of Interest' perfectly captures a life with no loveA still from "The Zone of Interest." Shortly after the meeting, the Höss family once again goes swimming in the river.

This time, Kylian Mbappé means it. The reports on Thursday of his decision to leave Paris St.-Germain, his hometown team, might have carried with them an unmistakable sense of déjà vu. They might have been copied and pasted, almost verbatim, from the last time this happened, and the time before that. It is less than two years since he and P.S.G. last came to the brink, his boxes packed, his desk emptied, his goodbye card signed.

The painstaking process behind “The Peasants,” the new painted film exercise from DK and Hugh Welchman, is only laid out after the film ends. As the credits roll, the directors show clips of painters viewing reference footage and then reproducing the images in oil on canvas, sometimes frame by frame. The filmmakers pioneered the inventive animation technique on their previous feature, the Oscar-nominated “Loving Vincent,” and they apply it here to a story of sweeping scale. Based on Wladyslaw Reymont’s novel, “The Peasants” follows Jagna (Kamila Urzedowska), a young woman in 19th century Poland who is driven into a loveless marriage with a wealthy widower (Miroslaw Baka) despite her ongoing flirtation with his strapping son, Antek (Robert Gulaczyk).

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will be the keynote speaker Wednesday at a United Auto Workers' political convention as he works to sway blue-collar workers his way in critical auto-making swing states such as Michigan and Wisconsin. But as recently as Monday, UAW President Shawn Fain was restrained in his comments, saying as the conference opened, "We have to make our political leaders stand up with us. She said his appearance should remind union members that Biden is on their side. Rothenberg said a union endorsement is important because polling shows many UAW members are often undecided in the spring before a presidential election. By Election Day, members and UAW retirees usually vote 60% Democratic, said Rothenberg, now a public relations consultant in Columbus, Ohio.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

The chain's latest expansion includes its first biscuit menu. We tried the sweet and savory biscuits to see whether they would entice newcomers to the brand. But it is going out on a limb with biscuits, entering a food category with some fierce competitors, such as Chick-fil-A, Cracker Barrel, and Hardee's. The chain's new biscuit lineup includes a breakfast biscuit sandwich, a chicken biscuit sandwich, a strawberries-and cream biscuit, and biscuits and gravy. I even went behind the scenes at Carl's Jr. years ago to learn how it made its scratch biscuits.

UK’s improving finances will bear no fiscal gifts
  + stars: | 2023-08-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 22 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Higher tax receipts helped Britain to borrow less than expected in July. The UK’s poor economic health leaves him with little room for fiscal giveaways ahead of a prospective 2024 election. Public sector net borrowing stood at 4.3 billion pounds in July, less than the 5 billion pounds expected by economists polled by Reuters. In the first four months of the fiscal year, borrowing was 11.3 billion pounds below the Office for Budget Responsibility’s forecast. The recent rise in bond yields will add around 18 billion pounds to debt interest spending by 2027/28, says Capital Economics.

Coinbase’s stablecoin bet pegs to wishful thinking

The crypto exchange will take a minority stake in Circle Internet Financial, issuer of stablecoin USDC. Such tokens, designed to track the U.S. dollar, haven’t delivered on promises of transforming finance. Coinbase already earns interest from reserves backing USDC through a partnership with Circle, and doesn’t expect any new major financial benefit. Meanwhile, U.S. legislation to regulate the tokens is stalled, and PayPal’s (PYPL.O) stablecoin launch last month drew criticism from Representative Maxine Waters, among others. Coinbase, meanwhile, is cozying up to pillars of traditional finance like BlackRock (BLK.N).

TPG dangles messy end for EY’s loveless marriage
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
On Monday, the Financial Times reported that private equity firm TPG (TPG.O) had approached EY about buying a stake in its consulting arm. Back in May of last year when EY’s split was leaked to the press, valuations were much more attractive. If TPG pushes for a full breakup, EY would still have to work out how to divvy up its tax advice business between audit and consulting. Given the challenges, EY may well decide it’s better to soldier on with an awkward marriage than risk a messy divorce. Target investors misread bullseye
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, Aug 16 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Target (TGT.N) had some luck hitting the bullseye this quarter. Target is getting its inventory in shape after a glut of products from last year caused it to slash prices. Still, the company slashed its sales and profit outlook as shoppers continue to spend more on food. E-commerce sales slumped nearly 11% – well below the overall sales decline of 5%. Target may well be beholden to consumer behavior, but it can steady its aim to hit marks under its control.

Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan martial ruler in 9/11 wars, dies
  + stars: | 2023-02-05 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +12 min
Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has died in Dubai aged 79 after a long illness, the army said on February 5, 2023. By Sept. 12, then-U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell told Musharraf that Pakistan would either be "with us or against us." They regrouped and the offshoot Pakistani Taliban emerged, beginning a yearslong insurgency in the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Though Pakistan under Musharraf launched these operations, the militants still thrived as billions of American dollars flowed into the nation. Born Aug. 11, 1943, in New Delhi, India, Musharraf was the middle son of a diplomat.
